BBMA Nominations Are Out But Where Are the Women?

The Billboard Music Awards nominations have been announced and there’s a noticeable lack of female artists – particularly in the country genre. In a time where the likes of Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Lambert and Lauren Alaina regularly feature high in all of Billboard’s top country charts, I only wish they were better represented in the nominations.

With the release of Lambert’s ACM award winning The Weight of These Wings and Morris’ Grammy nominated Hero, it’s surprising that neither made it into the ‘Top Country Album’ category at the least.

The snub hasn’t gone unnoticed either as Maren Morris tweeted saying that it was ‘interesting’ that female artists have been overlooked.

This issue however should not overshadow the achievements of other country artists, notably Luke Bryan, who is nominated in the all-genre category ‘Billboard Chart Achievement Award Presented by Xfinity’ alongside Nicki Minaj, The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd and Twenty One Pilots.

Following their wins at the ACM awards, Florida Georgia Line lead the nominations for country artists at the Billboard Music Awards. The duo are nominated for 6 awards: ‘Top Duo/Group’, ‘Top Country Artist’, ‘Top Country Album’ for Dig Your Roots, two in the category ‘Top Country Song’ for “H.O.L.Y.” and “May We All” featuring Tim McGraw and ‘Top Country Collaboration’ for “May We All”.
